The supply and installation of the specialized constant humidity control system of ANDRIANOS, was successfully completed in the cellar of the Argyros estate, which now has the desired humidity levels, in order to limit the evaporation of wine up to 70%!
Argyros estate was founded in 1903 and is now managed by Matthew Argyros, who belongs to the 4th generation of winemakers of the Argyros family. It is located in the Episkopi Gonia of Santorini and has 400 acres of vineyards, with an average age of 70 years, including some of the oldest vines on the island which are over 200 years old! Its philosophy is to produce exceptional wines based exclusively on the indigenous varieties of Santorini, such as Assyrtiko, Aidani and Mavrotragano. He focuses on wines with great sensitivity, character, balance and elegance with a dedicated commitment to quality.
The phenomenon of the reduction of the wine level, during maturation in the oak wooden barrels of the cellar, was a subject of concern for Matthaios Argyros and ANDRIANOS provided a solution to this problem, with the installation of a modern, 100% automated humidity control system for winery cellars.
The continuous decrease in wine level occurs due to the dehydration of oak wooden barrels, mainly due to insufficient moisture in the wine storage and aging areas. The 'share of angels', which is the amount of wine lost each year through the barrel, is a permanent and particularly important problem in wineries worldwide, since the wine level decreases dramatically during maturation & the economic losses are great. Wine losses through 225lt wooden barrels range from 10 to 12lt in sweet varieties and up to 20lt per year in dry wine depending on the type of barrel and the humidity and temperature conditions inside the cellars per season.
With the state-of-the-art specialized constant humidity control system of ANDRIANOS, the cellar of the Argyros estate now has the desired humidity levels to limit the evaporation of wine up to 70%! The system is set to start automatically when the humidity in the room drops to 75% and to stop automatically when it reaches 85%. (The ideal humidity level inside the cellars, according to international literature, is between 70% minimum and 85% maximum). It was also adjusted with special parameters through the control box to achieve the desired humidity level in a gradual manner, with the necessary work/pause timer programming (humidity values in %), thus contributing to the long-term and smooth operation of the machinery and equipment. It is 100% automated and keeps the required humidity level within the cellar constant throughout the year, regardless of the outdoor weather conditions prevailing per season.
With this new facility, the Argyros estate is upgraded even further, continuing the work of preserving its tradition and history, as well as the production of high quality wines. The reduction of wine losses from the oak barrels results in high savings and therefore a very fast return on investment! Moreover, according to international literature, it significantly improves the quality of wine to the highest possible levels!
